Towns Named Maplewood and the Like

According to my research, there are 19 towns named Mapleton in the United States and 4 international Mapletons. I got the inspiration for this blog by watching an old Judy Garland movie called The Clock. The main male in this movie played by Robert Walker and often about identities with some interesting minor characters mentions that he is from Maryland and a town there named Mapleton. I found no town in this state called Mapleton, but there is a Mapleton Road in Rockville. Perhaps one of the writers of this Vincente Minelli film who was Judy Garland’s husband at the time knew about Mapleton Road. It’s an excellent and underrated movie, by the way. Garland often didn’t play dramatic roles and this is one of her better performances. It’s almost as good as Minelli’s classic The Bad and the Beautiful made about 7 years after The Clock.

Like there are lots of towns that incorporate oak into their names, there are lots of maple towns in America, but they don’t always go by the name Mapleton. There are some towns name Maplewood, for example: and there are towns named Maplewood Park in Pennsylvania and Maple Park in Illinois. Maplewood Park is a town near Philadelphia, and Maple Park is east of DeKalb. There are Maplewoods in Missouri, New York, New Jersey, and Minnesota. Maplewood, MO is a town of about 8,000 that has become a ring community over time with many small businesses. I used to swim in its pool regularly in the summer. The largest Maplewood, however, is the town of Maplewood, NJ, which is near both New York City and Newark. It’s the place where Ultimate Frisbee was born and is a community of about 24,000. It’s not too far from Maple Meade.

There are several towns named Mapleton in the United States. There’s a town of about 8,000 in Utah with this name, a neighborhood in Indianapolis called Mapleton, and there’s even a Mapleton in North Dakota. The Mapleton in Michigan has become a ghost town.

Because there are vivid colors produced by maple trees in New England, there are several Mapletons there. There are New England Mapletons in New Hampshire and Maine, for example, and a Mapleville in tiny Rhode Island. Maple Heights in Ohio is a suburb of Cleveland. There are some Mapletons in the American Midwest too because Midwesterners grow many maple trees. They are in Wisconsin, Kansas, and Iowa.

Internationally, there are Mapletons in England and Australia. The Mapleton in Australia is in Queensland near the city of Nambour not too far from the South Pacific Ocean. Nambour is also close to the town of Bli Bli.

About roads-rus

Since the beginning, I've had to avoid writing about the downside of travel in order to sell more than 100 articles. Just because something negative happened doesn't mean your trip was ruined. But tell that to publishers who are into 5-star cruise and tropical beach fantasies. I want to tell what happened on my way to the beach, and it may not have been all that pleasant. My number one rule of the road is...today's disaster is tomorrow's great story. My travel experiences have appeared in about twenty magazines and newspapers. I've been in all 50 states more than once and more than 50 countries. Ruth and I love to travel internationally--Japan, Canada, China, Argentina, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, etc. Within the next 2 years we will have visited all of the European countries. But our favorite destination is Australia. Ruth and I have been there 9 times. I've written a book about Australia's Outback, ALONE NEAR ALICE, which is available through both Amazon & Barnes & Noble. My first fictional work, MOVING FORWARD, GETTING NOWHERE, has recently been posted on Amazon. It's a contemporary, hopefully funny re-telling of The Odyssey. View all posts by roads-rus
