On our way to Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ruth and I checked out the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac, Illinois. One of its better attractions is Bob Waldmire’s beyond eccentric 1966 school bus. Dreamer-artist-mapmaker Bob was historic 66’s biggest fan and spent his life traveling it.
Ruth and I went to in Grand Rapids to see if the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum lives up to its hype-“America’s most entertaining presidential museum”. It’s not. This is our 4th pm this year. The other three honored Reagan, FDR, and Nixon. There are 13 officially recognized presidential library/ museums in all, and we have only 4 to go-Clinton, Carter, Bush, and Bush.
We’re also here in Michigan to eat as many Traverse City cherries as we possibly can.

We’re getting ready to post a piece on mlui.org on Grand Rapids that mirrors your view. It’s based on reporting for a piece in the NYT, published last week. Grand Rapids has a lot of things going for it now that were not so apparent 15 years ago when the new development strategy was launched. It’s quite the story of budding achievement and turnaround.
